GOAL/MISSION
What is the goal of this workshop series? It seems that things are at a point right now where we need to transition from the goal of "pulling it off sustainably" - which happened successfully! - to something bigger like "Building, defining and empowering a community of independent media makers in the capital region." If we are able to focus on a goal or set of goals it will help tremendously in creating a model that is not only sustainable, but useful (even necessary!), and efficient.
YEAR-LONG SERIES
Switching to a year-long series is a way to allow for a bit more strategy in how we apply the goals and mission to what we plan and execute. In other words... if we want to offer a series of courses/workshops on similar topics we need time to look ahead beyond this fall. It will also make promoting the whole thing a little easier because once we plan it and get materials made for the year, we have more time to tactically and strategically reach out.
WORKSHOP TRACKS
You will notice that classes have been color according to "tracks". By conceptualizing workshops as part of a progressive continuum which starts basic and ends fairly advanced, it is easier to expect or encourage people to sign up for 5 workshops (at a slight discount) as opposed to just one, and by the end, they would really have gained a lot and will have had time to put some of it to work in practical situations or projects. In the promotional/informational booklet, it will also allow for some categorization which hopefully will let people know that there is this simple to advanced thing going on.
FACULTY
What should have been (or will be) part of the Goal/Mission paragraph was the interest in and commitment to building a core group of dedicated and competent faculty who have a deep understanding of community media and want to see the educational arm of the sanctuary grow and be sustained.
MODELING
if you are interested, check out the webpages for the workshop series at Squeaky Wheel in Buffalo and DCTV in NYC. I realize that Troy is neither of these places and we face different sets of problems (and have different advantages) than buffalo or nyc, but you can get an idea of what the model for a sustainable program of the future might be.
